ASA-IM/USSEC Bangladesh Activities In FY 2007-08

 

The core objective of ASA-IM/USSEC in Bangladesh is to promote the potentials of soybean as source of quality nutrition for both human and animal. To realize the objective, ASA-IM/USSEC has been organizing various types of promotional activities throughout the country to highlight the importance of soybean as an ingredient for animal feed and human food and the goodness of US grown soybean and US produced soy complex.
 
In FY 2007- 08, ASA-IM/USSEC conducted four basic projects in Bangladesh. These projects were designed to assist Bangladesh in developing capacity to process soybean for food and feed uses, understand the difference in quality parameters of soy products and developing the ability to establish business contacts with US soybean industry.
 
BG: 3613 & 6701-Soy Processing Support

This project provides technical and technological support to the small to medium scale entrepreneurs for processing of soybean into food and feed ingredients. Through the support of this project, two small soymilk plants have started production of soymilk and derivatives. One of the plants has been using US produced soy flakes as the raw materials for soymilk production. Another small capacity soy crushing unit is established in Jessore, the northern part of Bangladesh. This crushing plant has four Insta-Pro extruders and one large oil expeller. The plant also producing soy based floating feed for the aquaculture industry. This project also organized seminar, workshops and one-to-one meetings with the entrepreneurs to enlighten them on the business potentials of soybean.

The Project observed following achievements during FY 2007-08: 

- One extruder and expeller based soy crushing unit has been operating, crushing 20 MT soybean   each day producing 2800 Liter natural soybean oil and 17000 Kg soybean oil meal

- One floating feed operation has been running producing 12 MT floating feed for Tilapia feeding. 

- Two soymilk operations are running. One has been using soybeans and the other is U. S. made soy   flakes.
 
- One soy nuggets production facility is under consideration 

BG: 3614 & 6703-Soy in Feed Promotion

This project carried out campaign for soy inclusion in poultry, fresh water fish and shrimp feeds as the source of protein. The project also worked to develop market demand for US produced hi-pro soybean meal and soy protein concentrate in the feed ingredient market. Seminar, workshops and one-to-one meetings with the feed mills, feed traders, feed ingredient importers and poultry and fish farmers were organized. This project also participated in the nationwide Save the Fish Campaign with Bangladesh Fish and Shrimp Foundation. Joint collaborative seminars were also organized with the reputed feed industry partners to discuss the quality requirement of feed ingredients for sustainable and profitable feed businesses.

The Project observed following achievements during FY 2007-08: 

- One floating feed operation has been running producing 12 MT floating feed for Tilapia feeding.

- High end feed industry started using U. S. made soy protein concentrate in GP feed (in 2006-07, 900   MT SPC imported from USA)

- In 2007-08, feed industry showed keen interest in US origin SPC but extremely higher price forced   to suspend import 

BG: 3619 & 6700- U. S. Soy Food Promotion

The project mainly worked to promote the US made soy ingredients as the raw materials for producing nutritive foods. Soy protein isolate has been promoting through this project as the raw material of nutraceutical product. US made ready to use soy products such as packaged soymilk, tofu, soy flour etc. are also being promoted through the activities of this project. Seminars, workshops and one-to-one meetings with the food processors, food traders, food ingredient importers and health/nutrition professionals were organized. Food processing trainings and live demonstrations were also organized for the new entrepreneurs under the Soy Entrepreneurs Development Program.

The Project observed following achievements during FY 2007-08:
 
- One soymilk operation, using U. S. made soy flakes.
 
- U. S. soymilk brand "Silk" is now available in Superstores
 
- US made soy protein isolates are being used in high protein products.
 
BG: 3624 & 6709- U. S. Soybean Oil Promotion: The project mainly worked to promote the market potentials of U. S. made brand soybean oil. The project has two objectives:
 
- Direct promotion of U. S. made soybean Oil: Promotional campaigns were carried to introduce and   popularize U. S. made soybean oil. Seminars and workshops were being carried throughout the   country. ASA-IM also organized sales training for the sales persons and strategic training for the   shop keepers.

- Generic promotion of soybean oil as cooking media: Awareness development programs carried  throughout the country to highlight the quality and goodness of soybean oil as cooking media.
 
The Project observed following achievements during FY 2007-08:
 
- Two US soybean oil brands (Pure Wesson from Con Agra and American Chef from ADM Oil) are   widely available in the groceries. 

- In FY06-07, approximately 2200 MT refined and packaged soybean oil imported from USA. Other   than regular project related activities, ASA-IM/USSEC also organized the following activities in   FY2007-08:
 
Soy Industrial Tour: To educate the entrepreneurs of Bangladesh, ASA-IM organized three Soy Industrial Tours. Two teams were sent to India to visit several soy industries and one team went to USA to attend Soy Symposium in Chicago and to meet US based soy processing equipment suppliers 

Soy for Socio Economic Development in Bangladesh Project:

Under financial support from WISHH program, "Soy for Socio Economic Development in Bangladesh" project was formed to develop soy based entrepreneurship. A short term Child Nutrition Project also was formed, where soymilk and soy cookies were used successfully.
 
Bangladesh Dairy Hand Book Project: In FY 2007-08, ASA-IM completed a project to develop a "Dairy Handbook for Bangladesh" through contributions of local and international experts.
